State regulators issue stern warning to rideshare companies

About a month ago, we wrote about how San Francisco International Airport Director John Martin was cracking down on rideshare drivers ferrying passengers to the airport.

In a formal letter, Martin enlisted the help of the California Public Utilities Commission to assist with enforcement actions against Uber, Lyft, and other so-called "transportation network providers," whose drivers were found to be taking passengers to the airport despite a state decision requiring them to obtain permits from airport administrators to do so.

The permits haven't yet been obtained because the TNCs took issue with SFO's proposed pilot program, and subsequently refused to fill out the permit applications and send them in.

It appears CPUC President Michael Peevey took Martin's plea for help seriously. In a letter dated June 10, Peevey called on TNCs to cease airport operations until they had secured permits from airport authorities. The letter warns that if the companies do not comply and are found to be in violation of the state's decision governing TNCs, "the CPUC may revoke your permit to operate."

from SFO is indistinguishable from an ordinary private car doing that, because they are ordinary private cars. It's no different than me giving my neighbor a ride to the airport and him giving me some gas money for my trouble.

And if something is so dumb that it cannot be enforced, then why bother trying?

Yellow cabs and limo's get special facilities and wait zones at SFO, so obviously there are requirements for that. But Uber cars will just do what the rest of us do - either circle around or wait in the free cell phone waiting area

Do you think we all have the memory of a gnat? That we don't remember the years of taxi drivers treating passengers like garbage? That we don't remember them constantly flaunting rules within the code that you now complain about TNCs not being held to?

Who do you think is naive enough to believe we're worse off for these companies being around?

Jason Grant Garza here ... WOW a stern WARNING ... I am quaking in my BOOTS ... what about ENFORCING the law? Can I rob a BANK and get a stern warning? Can I rent out under AirBnd and get a stern warning?

Oh look at us the city professionals really really caring ... how late now, how long has this farce been going on, however, we really care with stern warnings and no prior enforcement; however, NOW we are on it. My why Isn't the CITY ATTORNEY filing charges as it did against the MUNI UNION for the sickouts? Here is clearly LAW BREAKING activity ... oh, that is RIGHT the CITY ATTORNEY is so concerned ...

Yes the LAWS only apply to peasants, not startups that are too big to fail, banks that are too big to fail, the San Francisco Department of Public Health that is too big to fail ... everything and everyone EXCEPT you the average citizen .. common man.

Keep DRINKING the KOOL-AID.

This is a exploding law suit waiting to happen!!
There is no way to tell the difference between a "Uber " driver and a Nieghbor dropping/picking up at the airport.
All a Uber driver has to do is take the uber sign off and put it back on after!!
I'm an American citizen of this great country and I have the right to be dropped off at the airport by whomever I ask to!!
Don't infringe on my right!!

Also.. The Taxi industry has been the same for almost 100 years without any update!!
It's time to move forward and update the system with what the citizen consumers want!!
Please remember this country belongs to the people and we will choose what needs to be regulated!
Use our voting power!! It's one of our rights!

All the trusts that were broken up over the years were the result of companies colluding with the government.

In the case of cabs here in SF, the city hiked up the cost of medallions to a insane level because of city greed and incompetence. the city colluded with cab companies to screw both the drivers and the customers.

Now the SFBG is complaining that the city/cab company gravy train has come to an end.

When Ma Bell was broken up I doubt the local progressive drones were so worried.

I can AND WILL allow whatever service I deem appropriate to take me to the airport. You CAN NOT regulate that and take my rights away. Seriously. #goodluck

It has nothing to do with our "safety" and thank goodness reading these comments, some people aren't as naïve as I thought. With the airport, the City just wants the pert trip fee it charges - from Uber. It's about $ people - progressives will lie, say anything to get more of your money to feed the City Hall monster - the giant, bloated, grossly overpaid City workforce.

They will not stop and they get creative when they have to...

If you are interested in sustainability, please do not patronize any carshare service that utilizes gas-guzzling limos, town cars or large SUV's. Is it so hard to make the slightest "sacrifice" by using a service that generally involves smaller cars? No, I have no financial stake in these services, nor do I use them. But in this supposedly informed, liberal and enviro-conscious city, I am appalled at the lack of attention paid to this issue. Big, (usually) black carshare SUV's careening around City streets is what I saw in my last visit to NYC last fall and now they are here in a big way. Town cars with one passenger? Make a statement by avoiding them. A small vehicle will get you around just fine. No one is going to see you behind that dark glass anyway.
